I am not the typical Christmas lover. I don’t necessarily celebrate every year. I certainly do not decorate every year and our families have gradually shifted to not exchanging gifts like we used to. I’m absolutely fine with that because it is not the presents that should matter.
On the other hand, when I am in the mood. I am IN THE MOOD. I don’t know if it’s because 2020 was such an odd year but, I’m looking forward to whatever kind of celebration Christmas ends up being.
This is usually what our little fake Christmas tree looks like. Our house is small and we just don’t have the room for a real, big tree. Oh how I wish we could get a real and big tree.
I think what I’ve always disliked about Christmas, especially as I got older, was the fact that buying new things was encouraged and expected. As a person who has almost always thrifted for the things I wanted or needed, I do not understand buying all things new. Toothbrush? Sure. Underwear? Most definitely. There’s so much though that do not need to be brand spanking new.
We usually try to make things for our nieces and nephews for Christmas because we want them to know how much we enjoy not only making things but, making things FOR them. We’ve given them things that were once ours because #1, we knew they’d like it, and #2, why buy new?
I made this for my nephew a couple of years ago when he was 1 or maybe even before. No way did he need new plastic toy. I completely understand those gifts are easy but, I wanted to make him something. It’s not like this looks great but, he never complained about it 😉 In fact, just last year my sister in law sent me a picture of him playing with it and saying the shapes. It was so darn cute.
